Blog 6: Bedroom activities

Updated: Aug 26, 2025

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you celebrating love today. Talking of love, I have something to confess. Brace yourself here. I think my bedroom is perhaps my favourite (or favorite, if you're American) place at the moment. Yes, it's true! Nighttime is quite an exciting and pleasurable experience for my hubby and I. Please behave yourself, it isn’t X-rated! And if it was, I certainly wouldn’t be sharing it on here (blush). What I’m talking about is getting into bed and reading a good book. Sorry if this is an anti-climax. Did you see what I did there?

Other parents of teenagers will probably relate to this; by the end of the day, and you're saying “goodnight” to the kids, which in parent terms translates as, “Right, I am now officially off the clock, do not ask me for anything until tomorrow morning, unless there's an earthquake, the house starts to collapse or you somehow manage to sneeze off your head,” you're ready for a well-deserved break. It's like my mini-vacation, and I do not want to be interrupted! I dash upstairs, get ready for bed, slip under the covers, get cozy and grab - my book! You guys are seriously filthy! As I was saying, I grab my book from the bedside cabinet, eager and ready to jump into whatever world it contains within its magical pages.

Having that relaxed, quiet time before going to sleep, just feels like a treat to me. Plus, as I am so busy with editing and looking after my kids, I don’t get much ‘me’ time. I am currently getting engrossed in The Hunger Games, which my other half bought me for Christmas. I'm quite excited because it's written in the present tense, which I haven't encountered for a while.

Trying out these different genres, and stories by numerous authors, allows me to experience different techniques, and, as I've said before, it's a great way to get ideas for my own writing, while expanding my knowledge. My editor brain, however, does tend to find odd errors, or at least, things I would've flagged up with the author if it were my project. Although, as we all know, part of being a creative writer means you are allowed to be a little naughty, and dare I say it ... break some of the rules, (as long as it works effectively) and it is fun to see how different authors rebel.

The great thing about my job is I get to read lots and lots and lots! Yes, people, I really am living the dream. In fact, I do dream about editing nowadays. But enough about me, what books have you read lately? Are there any that have captured your mind so much that you almost felt at a loss when it came to an end? Perhaps one that you wish had been written a little differently, or maybe it inspired you to experiment with that style yourself? If you're spending nearly all your time tapping the keyboard, getting words on the page, please don't forget to take a break and use those peepers for a spot of reading. After all, it is Valentine's Day and books need your love too. So do take some time for them. Whether it's in bed, like me, on your lunch break or while you're sat in the dentist's waiting room (which may help distract you), because dentists—EESSHK), it's always worth it!

Now, as I'm writing this prior to our annual 'love day', I'm unable to confirm how my man fared in relation to his romantic offerings. Nevertheless, I am hoping that later tonight ... come on, keep it clean! I was going to say, I will be sipping a newly acquired creamy glass of Baileys, after watching the new Captain America film at the cinema. You may be thinking, well that doesn't sound very special at all, Angie. Let me tell you, being whisked away from the house (and the kids) for a couple of hours is pretty much like I've just been given a free pass to Disneyland. I therefore will enjoy every minute of it. Unless of course, the film is a complete let-down ... But hey, it's still an evening out, chomping on popcorn, so I'm sure I'll survive. And it's our anniversary next week so the romantic-o-meter will be cranked right up for that day.

Until next time my lovely blog supporters. I hope you all enjoy your day, no matter how you spend it.
